I've installed original XP(no service packs/updates) with no firewall and was infected with adware (possible other stuff too) within minutes. Lol That was without actually going/doing anything. Yes, some sites can even load a keylogger onto your PC without your knowledge.
You need to be using the latest Firefox and preferably Noscript. Keyloggers obviously aren't blocked by firewalls, or else I wouldn't have suggested that being the case. Firewalls won't prevent you from being hacked.

SP2 fixes exploits that exist in original XP. I know for a fact one time I installed an XP with no service packs and it was infected with some sort of adware before even doing anything. If you visit dodgy sites, download anything from ****(lol they censor fourCl-l4n wtf?) try and download hacks or just have a really stupid password then it has a pretty high chance. If you have a well secure password (and change it every so often) and know how to avoid phising scams and key loggers then it probabaly has a 0% chance. There are simple ways of playing your steam games without even logging on to steam (even if you don't have your account) but I won't list them for fear of teh ban hammerz.
Easiest way to hack a Steam account is to take their username, find another less secure site they use the same name on (i.e. Random internet forum), and hack that instead. Most people tend to use the same passwords on various sites, so finding one's good enough to find the same ones on secure sites. And yeah, 'smart browsing' is by no means good enough. You can get nailed on sites, whether legitimate or not - those big sites have other ads that aren't under their control in rotation, and all it takes is one of the ad-hosting sites to get hacked.
In the last couple weeks I saw boston.com's site get hit, and they're basically a straight newspaper website. Firefox+NoScript is pretty good at blocking drive-by downloads, even if it disables about half the internet. That said, Firefox without NoScript is essentially the same as using IE at this point, and has been for the last two-three years or so. People adapt to what's popular, and FF became popular.
