Feb 17, 2014. My card is awus036h (8187b chipset) I know it is possible to increase tx power in Windows XP by changing values in 8187.ini file. My chipset is 8187B not 8187L, i have latest realtek drivers but i dont have tx slider, in xp i must find 8187.ini file and replace all the zeros with 1. But in windows 7 i.

Hello everyone, First off,the Home users: The product does not work as advertised,it works better than that.The range of the adapter is beyond comprehension,i did read all 140 reviews,and they were almost all good,but i never imagined the Alfa adapter to be such a beast.If you are looking to extend your range at home,mansion,castle,apartments or hook up a few houses down to a hotspot,dont think twice.I am in the Middle East,wich means buildings are in close proximity so the interference i encounter here is a nightmare,and still Alfa blasted through it without hick up. Some users say it gets Hot when on for long,but thats not true,it does get warm tho,but not 'Hot' where you think its gonna die on you. It arrived in perfect condition without a scratch or nic on the package.The adapter itself is so light,that when i first lifted the box i thought it was empty,i couldnt imagine that a adapter with 2 antennas one of them a Panel,cd and user guide,will be lighter than a TV remote. If you simply want to use this device to connect to a wireless network (i.e. Client device) on Linux, that's fine. If you want to use this device as an access point in Linux, then NO DICE. It's not a limitation with the hardware - it's a limitation with the driver. This is why you can use this device in access point for Windows but not in Linux (different driver implementation with different limitations). All the ALFA Awus036H USB adapters I have owned or used have so far been great.

They are plenty powerful, support injection, are fast etc. The drivers install automatically in Windows 7, and in Linux most Kernels already support these adapters out of the box. Things to note and/or downsides: 1. If you plug one of these into a USB hub that is receiving the wrong voltage power, it will fry the ALFA adapter and render it broken permanently.

I accidentally plugged a 12V DC power supply into a USB hub that needed 5V and then I plugged my ALFA into it. The alfa started smoking. And thats all she wrote. If your ALFA adapter starts under-performing, losing large amounts of power or range, or starts acting up: try taking it out, and plugging it into the USB port of a laptop, or desktop PC (a different one of course.) This model is not wireless N. Some linux kernels and distros have major problems connecting to WEP access points, it has nothing to do with the ALFA adapter. Powerful yet small and inexpensive. The UI is worth the money alone. Many public wifi hotspots or RV parks rebroadcast the signal, and your dumb iDevice or laptop just picks one up (usually the case).

With the Alfa UI you can choose which signal to use, based on signal strength. It displays your connection speed, strength, and quality, plus many other geeky features. Also depending on what type of computer and OS you're using, you can even set up your own WiFi hotspot, so your other devices can use this connection instead of the weaker, further away access point. The only thing I would change is to include a mounting bracket or a way to mount this on a wall. I will create my own bracket and then this will be perfect. I am quite pleased with this network adapter and the accompanying antenna. This is the second Alfa AWUS036H that I have owned; I purchased this new unit because my last one's electronics seemed to be glitching out.

Not that this detracted from the item, however; my last unit lasted me a good 3-4 years of on-and-off continuous use. To people buying this for the long range, I found the signal strength difference between the 7dBi panel antenna dn the 10dBi Omni antenna to be negligible (in my case). The 7dBi panel antenna does seem to be a bit more reliable overall, however, and if you know exactly where to aim it you may be able to attain better results as the panel is directional. The CD included did not match the hardware, I tried a few times to figure it out, but if the Awus036H drivers where on the CD I could not find them. So, online, find the correct drivers, install.

This is clearly the greatest surprise I have ever had in a tech toy. We held our annual 'Planning Camp Out' this weekend, where our Troop's PLC (the Scouts!) spent 2 days planning out the coming year.

The adults are there for reference and support (looking up stuff and keeping everything running!) As with most Scout camps, WiFi and Cell service are poor to non-existent. Our camp site was a 1/4 mile through the woods (486 paces) from the camp's WiFi. With this, we were able to get a surprisingly good signal a good FIVE MINUTES WALK away from where our cell phones could grab the signal.

This enabled us to reference school and church schedules when we had questions, as well as send out 'we made it' messages. Tech Hint: Turn the paddle's 'ALFA' logo around and point that AT THE TARGET. (Not as pictured.) SIX STARS!!!! Bought this for my pentesting practice. With my laptop's wifi card (a good atheros chip) I could only pick up 3 networks with anything near 2-3 bars (mine and my next door neighbors directly on either side of me) With the Alfa and the awesome antennae included I pick up over 20 signals and every single one (I'm not exaggerating) is 4 bars or above, most are 5. I live in a town-home and on the opposite side of where my unit is located the homeowners assoc. Has a free wifi AP that people can connect to. It is a good.3 miles away and has about 7 town-homes in between I pick it up with 3 bars and plenty of signal for a quality internet connection. It works out of the box with Windows 7 (had to connect to the internet to download a driver) every Linux flavor I have at my fingertips works with no installation.

Lets say Belize, or Bolivia and get a full range of channels and transmit at a full 1 watt. When I did that and a Airodump-ng scan I had so many AP's come up under -60 power that even maximizing the terminal couldn't even hold all the AP's. Keep in mind that's only the ones UNDER -60 I picked up a total of 40 AP's in close enough range to inject or capture WPA handshakes. I'm ordering a couple more for my guys at work (I work in networking services at a Hospital) I'd easily pay double this for what I got. Hello all, I'm wondering if anybody here can help me out, I have a situation in which I believe the antenna to be buggy or perhaps I'm not doing something right. I've had my Alfa antenna for a few days now, having originally bought it to connect to the guest wifi in the timeshare in which I live. (I help manage here).

My house is about 300-400 feet away from the router. Upon connecting my alfa to both of my computers (Windows 7 64 bit/Windows 8 32 bit Tablet PC) I did not pick up any networks in the vicinity.

I figured that I would take it down to the clubhouse, where the router is located. My alfa then picked up a signal, and I decided to walk it back to my house while connected to the network. Upon walking back, about 15 feet in front of my door, the signal hovered at 65%. I took a few more steps backwards and the network suddenly stopped working. Driver Motherboard Foxconn G31mxp. Inside my house, I try to click on the guest access network, which is still coming up at around 60%, and the program jumps to the second tab for a brief moment before kicking me back to the main tab. When on the main tab, I notice that the device makes no further attempt to look for signal, and It does not connect at all.

Apart from this, when I start up my PCs and try to 'plug and play' at my house, the device does not discover anything at all, even though the network should be discovered and in the 60% range. Any help or recommendations to forums would be appreciated.

I don't mean to give a good device a poor review, but my experience as of today has been crummy.
